Innovative and Cool – EOS Leads The Lip Balm Industry – A Fast Company

Years ago, buying lip balm was like looking for a hidden treasure. Unpacked and tucked away on a shelf of a local drugstore or supermarket. Back then, lip balm was encased in a small, cylinder-like tube and the price tag covered a majority of it. Lip balm was primarily used for chapped lips and the flavors were limited. The original flavor tasted bland and if you wanted to kick it up a notch, you could choose mint or cherry.

Approximately 8 years ago, a new orb styled lip balm called EOS started to pop up at Walgreens, then Racked, Walmart, and finally Target. The pastel colored orbs were gaining attention of the popular beauty style magazines, Allure and Cosmo. The beauty editors were raving about the fruit flavors and couldn’t get enough of this new chap-stick.

EOS was gaining attention from stars Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus. These ladies were spotted pulling out tubes of EOS lip balm from their handbags. The word is out.


Taking the lip balm industry by storm, EOS ( Evolution of smooth) is ranking amongst the top leaders in lip balm – surpassing Chapstick. In an interview by the Fast Company, co-founded by Sanjiv Mehra, and Jonathan Teller, are selling millions of these easy–to-handle orbs per week. They are said to be a billion dollar company by the year 2020.

Mehra, Teller, and Craig Dubitsky (whom left the company before it launched), came up with the idea to shake up the beauty aisle. Since the product was primarily used by women, they started to focus on a beauty regime. Mehra and Teller wanted a product that was “indistinguishable” from their predecessors’.

EOS was created to be fun, enjoyable, and style conscious. The orbs are compactable and fit easily in your hand. There is a wide variety of pastel-colored orb lip balms to choose from. Most importantly, there is a multitude of out-of-this-world flavors-
